Setting up an Email POP box with GMail
Categories: Tutorial | Tags: Google
With GMail, you can quickly configure it to use your professional "pop box" account (e.g. info@yoursite.com) to provide free, web based mail without the worry of backup or looking unprofessional.
If you are already hosting with Made Simple Media, the email address is part of your hosting package and using GMail is free, so this solution is perfect for those on a tight budget.
1) If you don't already have a Google account, you can make one here
2) Next you need to sign up for GMail
3) When you sign up, you'll get an myname@gmail.com account. Now this is ok, but to appear more professional it's best to have an email address that ends in your domain name.
For example, if you website is www.mywebsite.com, you could have email@mywebsite.com, info@mywebsite.com
4) We should have already provided you with the email of your choice and some settings to use with it, if not, just contact us.
5) Now, to use GMail with your nice professional email address, make sure you are logged in to your GMail account and click "Settings" top right:
6) You should now see the settings panel. Now click the "Accounts and Import" tab across the top of the settings tab, then click "Add POP3 email account":
7) Enter the email address we've set up for you:
8) Click "Next Step" and then enter the details on the next page which we have provided you with:
You should now be able to received to your GMail, anything that is sent to your POP box!
If you have any problems, please let us know.
9) You can also send from GMail, using your nice professional POP box email address. If you do this too, noone will ever see your GMail address.
To do this, go to "Settings" (top right) again and click "Accounts and Import":
10) Under "Send Mail As:" make sure the option "When Replying to a message" has been set to "Reply from the same address the message was sent to".
Click "Send mail from another address" and follow the on screen prompts.
11) Note, you need to verify it is in fact your email address, and GMail will tell you what to do. Because we have already set up your email address with GMail, this is just a matter of clicking a link when you receive the verification email from Google.
